Google's Leadership Rules

Posted by Claude on Friday 25th November 2011 at 13:52:00

What happens when the search engine giant wants to find out what it would take to build “better bosses” at Google?
They analyse and correlate data to the nth degree and come up with what might be called “The 8 Habits of Highly Effective Google Managers”, ranked according to importance.
These 8 habits mirror the results of research conducted at other companies, and they continue to debunk the commonly held myth that a manager must be as good or even better a technical expert than his team members.
This ability ranked dead last of the 8 Habits. Technical expertise is important, but it pales in comparison to something as simple and basic as bosses who made time for one-on-one meetings, who helped people think through their problems by asking questions, and who took an interest in employees’ careers and lives.
People typically leave a company for one or a combination of either feeling that their work doesn’t matter, not getting along with their co-workers, and the biggest variable, not getting on with their boss.
The manager had the biggest impact on employees’ performance and how they felt about their jobs.
The good news for manager’s to improve team performance is that they do not need a personality transplant. All that is required is the consistent application of a few simple behaviour changes that can have a profound impact on team performance.
A meaningful question to ask yourself as a manager and leader is “How consistent am I in making time to engage with my employees on a one-to-one basis”?
Working with a coach specializing in developing and improving effective leadership behaviour can help you transform your leadership impact and substantially improve business results.
Claude Warner is a PE based Executive, Leadership and EQ coach, trainer and consultant.
He is Hay accredited to administer their Emotional and Social Inventory (ESCI), a multi-rater assessment which measurers 12 key behavioural competencies for effective leadership.
The ESCI can be combined with group or one on one coaching programmes to develop leaders that can connect, engage and inspire high performance that delivers bottom line results.
